There is a private medical clinic in Mahahual with English speaking doctors. There are also small pharmacies in Mahahual (details in the guest book). There is a hospital in Chetumal if needed.

Our caretaker can obtain fish and lobster for you, weather permitting. There are also two fishing co-operatives in Mahahual where you can buy fish and lobsters.

The nearest grocery stores are in Mahahual, a 30+ minute drive from our villa. But we recommend shopping for groceries initially at one of the large markets along the highway when you drive from Cancun. If you fly into Tulum, there are several large large stores in town. Mahahual does have a bakery, produce stands, meat market and several small grocery stores.

 We send detailed travel information and directions to you two weeks before you arrive. 

The villa is at 19°00'29.7"N 87°35'25.2"W, about a 2.5 hour drive from Tulum and a 4 hour drive from Cancun. If your flight arrives in the afternoon, you may care to spend the first night in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum and enjoy a relaxing drive the following day. We do not recommend driving in the dark. But, even if you were to arrive late, our caretaker would expect you and help you move in.

 No. The roads are very good all the way to the coast, so you won't need a 4-wheel drive to get there. However, vehicles with high clearance are an asset. We are 7 km north along the beach road which has some potholes, though it is easy to navigate. If you plan going into the Sian Ka'an reserve you can get there with a regular car except during rainy season when a vehicle with high clearance is advisable. 

 Most of the way is highway 307, an excellent road. Only the last few miles/kilometers of coast road are rougher and slower going. 

 All major car rental companies operate at Tulum and Cancun airports. In the holiday and high seasons (late Dec-Apr), we recommend you reserve in advance.

There is a daily bus connecting Cancun or Tulum to Mahahual directly. In case of changes, there is a second category service to Limones from where one can take a taxi to the villa.   

There are several transport companies based out of Mahahual that provide service to and from the Tulum airport.

  Taxis in Mahahual are plentiful and very reasonably priced.

 - Jan-Apr (high season): Dry, warm days, cooler nights.
- May-June: Hotter and though still mostly dry, risk of the occasional shower.
- July-Aug: Hot and humid, hurricane season (till end Oct) though they are rare.
- Sep-Oct (low season): Hot, less humid, but rainiest time of year.
- Nov-Dec (mid/holiday season): Dry, warm days, cooler nights, little rain. 

The official currency is the Mexican peso. U.S. dollars are accepted by many tourism-oriented businesses, but pesos are useful for smaller restaurants, shops, taxis and local purchases. 

Spanish is the official language, although English is commonly spoken in tourist areas. A friendly hola, por favor and gracias are always appreciated.

 In the high season (Nov-Apr), ships dock each week at the Costa Maya cruise ship port, located a few kilometers up the coast from Mahahual village. Many of the passengers stay in the duty-free port zone and enjoy the facilities there, while others go on excursions. By 5PM all passengers are back on board... and Mahahual reverts to being a sleepy Caribbean village
